Jobs in Indian Railways have always been an enticing opportunity for every aspirant. But many a times, people lag behind without proper knowledge of procedures and guidelines of the selection procedure. With this article, we bring you the vital procedures that determines the typing efficiency for candidates, who undergo a skill test of type writing (both conventional and electronic mode) to secure their job positions in various profiles. Lets have a look at the essential elements that is required for testing the typewriting skills that are required for various profiles of job positions in Indian Railways.
Choice of mode of typing:
  • A candidate can choose to type either through manual typewriter or through A Personal Computer (PC).
  • For manual typewriting, the candidate need to bring his own machine to the test center and the test venue don’t provide any alternative machine if the machine dysfunctions.
  • PC is provided for aspirants opting to the electronic medium.
  • Question Papers and typing sheets are offered at the venue for every category of candidates
Typing Format:
  • The candidates appearing the test can write on one side of the blank sheet only with double-space indentation.
Required Speed of Typewriting:
  • For selection of candidates the minimum speed that needs to be attained is 30 words per minute in English and 25 words per minute in Hindi, provided the writing is done on a manual machine.
  • The minimum required speed is 40 words per minute in English and 35 words per minute in Hindi, if done on a PC.
Mistakes and overlooking:
  • 5% of the mistakes are usually overlooked for the typing skill test is done through manual typewriter or through PC, when the editing tool is disabled.
  • However, all mistakes are taken into account, while editing is enabled and allowed on a PC.
  • The mistakes are categorized into two types; a) Full Mistake & b) half mistake
    • Full Mistakes: Every type of mis-spelled word, substitution of word/figure, spelling error by way of repetition/ addition/ transposition/ omission/ substitution of a letter/letters, will be considered as a full mistake.
    • Half Mistake: Any type of Spacing/ Punctuation/ Paragraph/ Wrong capitalization/ Crowding/ Piling/ Over-typing of letters/ faulty operation of shift or letter key will be calculated as a half mistake.
    • Total number of mistakes will be addition of number of full mistakes and half the number of half-mistakes
    • However, repeated words/ group of words in a sentence, will be ignored from total word count, and will not be counted as a mistake.
Time of test:
       
  • The tests are timed for typing skill. Candidates are allowed only 10 minutes to prove their typing skills either in manual typewriter or through PC.
Calculating the formula for final result:
  • There is a clear formula for calculating the speed of writing adopted by Railway Recruitment Boards.
  • The formula is:         No. of total words typed – (No. of mistakes x 10)
Time of Test
  • An example of the calculation:
    • For example, You types 1650 keystrokes in 10 minutes
    • The total words typed: (1650/5=) 330 words (5 keystrokes are considered as one word.
    • Total number of mistakes: 25
    • Mistakes that are ignored: 5% of 330 = 16.5 words
    • Effective mistakes to count: 25 – 16.5 = 8.5 words
    • Net words:
330 (total words typed) – (8.5 (Effective mistakes) X 10) = 245
  • Typing Speed: 245/10 = 24.5 words per minute.
Additional Typing:
  • If a person completes his assigned paragraph and still have additional time in hand, can continue typing till the final bell, with the same paragraph (of question) from the beginning again.
  • The total word count will be calculated with the original paragraph typed + the additional section of paragraph typed
Final answer script submission:
  • After the time is over, the candidates need to submit all papers including the question paper, typed script, additional blank papers (if any) to the invigilator before leaving the hall.
  • No candidate is permitted to take any form of paper (including blank paper) or tear any paper in the examination hall.
  • Candidates typing on PC need to log-in to their systems before typing and printing. Any such print out should be signed by the candidates and both invigilators on all pages of answer script before submission.
  • No prohibited items, such as calculators, mobile phones, pagers, notebooks, etc. are permitted inside the examination hall.
  • No change of date or venue is permitted under any circumstances.
